Rommel

Rommel, Generalfeldmarshall Erwin (1891-1944)

Rommel served with distinction during the First World War and remained as infantry regimental officer and army instructor during the inter-war period. In the Second World War his success in the campaigns of 1940 led Hitler to appoint him as Commander of the Africa Corps. In this role he had notable successes against British forces in North Africa in the 1941-42 period, including the capture of Tobruk in June 1942. He was brought back to Germany as the axis forces collapsed and in 1944 commanded the key Army Group B in France at the time of the Normandy landings. Rommel committed suicide on 14 October 1944 after his involvement with the assassination attempt on Hitler was discovered.
